  • U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, Lectures on Terrorism, Nukes, and Cyber Warfare
Mary Beth Long, Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, Lectures on Terrorism, Nukes, and Cyber Warfare. The 15th Annual Mark Luchinsky Memorial Lecture in association with Schreyer Honors College presented former Assistant Secretary of Defense and Pennsylvania State University alumna, Mary Beth Long, at The State Theatre on Thursday. Long’s lecture, titled, “Terrorism, Nukes, and Cyber Warfare: Are We Prepared?” provided a glimpse into the current and future problems associated with global terrorism, nuclear weapons, and cyber warfare. The globalization of the world is changing at a rapid rate. Long explained with an exercise by having her audience stand and asking some simple questions:“Anyone that used a GPS or Star Navigation system in the last year, or any device that helped you turn in the right direction to the grocery store, sit down. If you called your bank, your insurance company, and your credit card company, and your pretty sure the person on the other end of the phone was not in the United States, you can sit down. The rest of you, if you’ve shopped on the internet, you can sit down,” Long said. This simple exercise was done to demonstrate the rapid changes of globalization and how it affects our daily lives. Just by this demonstration, Long simplified how technology has progressed in making global communication more accessible to connect countries easier in business and commerce.“The world has changed at such a rapid rate, and is actually accelerating.” she said. “The world is an increasingly small place.”In an increasing small place, Long spoke on three issues that present a problem on the increasing globalization. Although there are a lot of good thing that are brought to us by the inter relationship of our global partners which enrich our lives, she spoke of the three issues that negatively affect globalization, Terrorism, Nukes, and Cyber Warfare. In the past, the main concerns of the United States were conflicts with Nation States capable of unleashing harm to the United States and its allies. With the change of globalization, the United States must and is already in the process of preparing for Non-Nation States capable of harm and conflict.“Non-Nation States or Non-State Actors now have the means of conducting warfare using conventional and unconventional weapons that were traditionally only available to Nation States.” Long said. “War is being conducted differently, it is also fundamentally changing.”Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda is an example of an increasing presence that is able to use these weapons to conduct middle-east terrorism. Although there have been great strides on the war with Al Qaeda, they have increased in number as well as support with local tribes such as the Taliban. Al Qaeda is a strong supporter of the Taliban along the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan.“When it comes to nuclear weapons there are three challenges to gaining a nuclear weapon: first is getting enough fusile material, second is weaponizing it, and third is the delivery via missiles,” Long Said. Main countries that we are concern with nuclear weapons programs are Iran and North Korea. The primary reasons for nuclear weapons for North Korea are for leverage in threatening other countries such as Japan and South Korea, internal prestige and legitimacy, and stabilization of the region to protect against invasion.Cyber warfare is a recent and evolving way of terrorism. Examples were given of possible attacks on computers that run energy facilities and government data. Long said, “Image for a second what it would mean if an attacker shut down the security and safety computer systems at Three Mile Island?” With an integrated global network, access can be made from different parts of the world.Long ended her lecture by addressing the current problems that must be faced. “The immediate concern is the lack of policy, the lack of awareness not only from a governmental perspective but from a commercial perspective. The plans don’t adequately address the immediate need which is concerns of about the vulnerabilities and our critical national infrastructure,” She said.

  • Wolf and Dog
The Dog and the WolfThere was wolf and dog. Wolf has terrible shape because he is not healthy, nobody takes care of him and he does not have dwelling. He wanders about from place to place. He always looks around for finding food but he has a freedom. Wolf can do everything whenever he wants. On the other hand, dog is healthy and he has job that guarding the sheep. Dog can eat regularly and sleep well at warm place. Dog has his master who takes care of him well but every night his master chains him up. One day, dog suggestion to wolf that lives together, however he does not want to live without freedom so he decided to live just as usual. Who made the better choice, the dog or wolf? The wolf has choice freedom. Nobody interfere his life and he can have his own way in everything. And the dog choice quality of life even thought he doesn’t have freedom at night time he satisfies his life.In my opinion, dog have better choice than wolf. Wolf said “If I come to live you, I won’t be free anymore” but I don’t think so. The wolf thinks about only one side of negative. He just focuses on Chains and he misses many positive things from dog’s life. Dog also has a freedom. He can eats, sleeps whenever he wants even well those are one part of freedom. He chains up only at night time. It means he can not go out just at night, It is not mean dog does not have freedom. Dog can sleep well at warm place and chain is not bothering him to sleep. It is enough freedom that can sleep at night. Why wolf needs freedom at night time, for running or Walking? Are those things more important than health or food for live? I do not really understand why wolf did not choice dog’s life even though he got chance to live well as dog. If wolf choice dog’s life, he would get health, safe place, food and friend. And also he can enjoy his life more than before. Wolf gave up many important things because of only one thing that not worthy. Some of my class mates claim that freedom is the best thing in our life, freedom is hope, there is nothing to compare with freedom, and they can not move there life level without freedom, however can it be so? How about live without food, house, and job. It is no better than a beggar. Beggar is awfully free. If freedom is worthier than other things, why people do not live as beggar? Wolf has only one little hope that finding food. Is this hope can make him to get better life? Even he walks hardly and he is weak. I think, wolf do not have the aim in life. Aimless life is as good as dead. He can not take care of himself, much less how he can enjoy his life and move higher level of life than now. Wolf should choice dog’s life because it is worth choice though he gave up his freedom at night. In conclusion, perfect freedom is nonexistence. Freedom is by no means perfect free. We need set limits our freedom as dog’s master chains dog up at night time. If everybody wants to get perfect freedom and everybody does everything whenever or whatever they want, probably nobody control our world. The chain represent limits of freedom not repress freedom of life.

  • Frankenstain 줄거리와 조승희 사건(영문)
We have to open our minds to those who are alienated from society. A feeling of alienation makes a person commit crimes, like the creature from Frankenstein and Seung Hui Cho, who committed a massacre at Virginia Tech.Victor was born in 1772, and his parents were Frankenstein and Caroline from Geneva. He was a person who had an interest in science. He is the main character. He has a lovely sister. Her name is Elizabeth. She has an attractive appearance. She was charming and sweet. They were good siblings even though she was an adopted child. They loved each other. Their younger brother William was born in 1787 and that same year their mother, Caroline died.Victor goes to University of Ingolstade in Germany in 1790. He meets Franz Waldman, who is a professor of Physiology at the university. Victor gets advice from him on how to be the best scientist that he can be. While he was studying about life and death, he decided that would make a giant man. He expected that it would treat him as could not. Time goes by, and Victor becomes sick of him and runs away from him. After one year from that time, Victor got a letter from his father and the letter said that William had murdered the creature. When he was going back to Geneva, he decided that he would avenge the creature. The creature had lived at an ice cave. He blamed him for murdering his brother but he rather blamed Victor. The creature gave a talk to him that he could not remember anything his origin and it made him confused. He wandered to find food and shelter. When he found good place to stay, the people who lived there ran away or tried to do harm him. One day, he saw one family. They seemed really happy and he wanted join them. He could learn how to speak from them. He shared their happiness and sadness with them, however he could not show up in front of them because of his horrible appearance. He practiced speaking by him self. He wanted to be a human’s friend but people judged him only by his appearance. Actuareature just like him. To make the female creature Victor went to Scotland with Henry in September. While making the other creature, he decided to quit because he thought that it would also murder. He thought it could harm people. The male creature became aware of this so he killed Henry.Victor felt that the creature was going to kill Elizabeth, so he tried to find him before he killed again; unfortunately, the creature killed Elizabeth before Victor found him. And a couple days later Victor’s father died from the shock of finding out that Elizabeth was murdered.Victor wanted to revenge against the creature. He went to the ice mountain where he was supposed to meet the creature, however Victor died by disaster while looking for the creature. The creature realized that everyone died because of him. And he thought that only death can consulate him, so he commits suicide. What I learned from this story is that we should not judge a person by his or her appearance or background. I connected ond shooting occurred at Noris hall. This shooting had 30 victims. He sent a video to NBC after the first killings. This message was similar to the Columbine High School shooting that occurred eight years ago. He planned his attack carefully for two months. He seemed antisocial. His writings for his papers were disturbing. He was against rich kids and debauchery and he wrote a note after the first killings that “You caused me to do this”.A panel gets Cho’s mental-health files. Cho has mental illness and Cho’s roommates feared that Cho had become suicidal. Sometimes police looked for him because he was harassing female students. If a student has trouble, the school suggests to go to the counseling center; however he rejected it. According to people who were around him, such as roommates, professor and classmates, he did not hang out with any friends and he took medicine for his mental problems and he also wrote a play about a school massacre. He wants to be a hero. He needs attention fress. Gun purchasing laws should be changed to be stricter. The creature in Frankenstein and Seung Hui Cho has something in common. They live in isolation. They need someone who can talk with them. They need love; however the creature was ugly and had scary features, so people did not want to be his friend even though he had a kind heart. Similarly Cho was an outcast because he is looked and talked weird. People ran away from them when they tried to make friends. People judged them only by their appearances. They were anxious to belong in society but that society excluded them and their anxiety turned into a grudge. The creature said Victor made him kill people and Cho said, “you (society) caused me to do this”. Society becomes the object of resentment. Finally, they killed people because of their own revenge and then killed themselves. In my opinion, we have to open our minds to those who are alienated from the society. A feeling of alienation made Cho and the creature commit crimes. If 007.
