In the lecturer’s college years, he envied those who worked in a small bank because they were well-paid. After 7 to 8 years, when the economic crisis hit Korea, the small bank was the one that suffered the most. Accordingly, the most important factor that affects you after your graduation is the economic situation. In this lecture the speaker would like to discuss economy and management.What will happen in next 5years in the field of economy and business is more important than the knowledge from the book. In economy, there are periodical movements antting worse, the private business gets hurt the most. There are four causes that lead to financial instability which are sub-prime mortgage the bank without restructuring, debts from the decreasing price of funds and stocks and lower price of real-estate market. These four factors together bring the problem in security loan. To solve this problem, government should come up with the right decision. In this low growth economy, co-workers can turn into competitors. The speaker advised students should be prepared to work under such tough conditions.Before finishing the speech, the speaker gave two tips on investment. Firstly, students should remember that “cash is king”, meaning that cash is much safer than other matters. Secondly, do not borrow too much from the bank and study funds. When the speaker was a junior in college, she wanted to test how much traditional music has impact on her life. So she packed her bags and left to visit 20 countries for 6 months with 3 other traditional music majors. The foreigners do not have prejudice about Korean traditional music and she wanted to seek their response. When they were in South-East Asia, they were not doing great. In Europe, they received few criticisms and met other Koreans. The trip overall helped her find the potential in Korean traditional music and supported her not to give up on her dream. She can now say with confidence that the reason why she studies the traditional music is to project Korean and its music. Know w, she created new division called a new desktop printer. At that time, the company had hard time with sales of printers and the CEO was forced out. With the return of former CEO who convinced her to become a president. However, things were not doing great as SEC invested accounting practices and losses were accumulated. Her motive was to keep the corporate culture intact. She then came up with new solution where the company replaced consumer printer service to the high end digital color printers and copier services. Color pages from office copiers were on the rise in which the profit margin was 5 times greater than the black and white one. As a woman leader, she has successfully shown the possibilities and potential of woman CEO and inspired many other women that it is not out of their reach.Edward Neville Isdell is the former CEO of The Coca-Cola Company. He was born in Belfast and grew up in Zambia in southern Africa. He admires Mandella for his refusal to hate, despite many years sphallenges to overcome. Her family was poor and it was in times of World War 2 and what makes the matters worse is that she was a girl. People at that time believed that a girl could not do such adventurous things. Regardless of other people’s laughter, her mom encouraged her. The opportunity came when her friend’s family invited her to Kenya. She saved up money and went on to an adventure to Kenya where she met Louis Ricky. He gave her a job as a secretary and under his supervision, she studied about Chimpanzees.The speaker gave a brief explanation of Chimpanzees which are very like human. After he graduated and got a job, he met someone who changed his daily habit. He has been getting up at 6:30am since then and he was able to finish graduate school while working full time. In this speech, he would like to talk about the meaning of leadership and the role of leadership.Leadership is consisted of four elements: people, power, process, and performance. The leadership is linked to performance. The former Korean soccer coach Guss Hiddink, was called by the nickname, 5:0. This is because he lost 2 games by 5 to 0. Thereby, he was not considered as a great leader. The great leader like Lee Sun-Shin or Churchill had accomplished great performances. Secondly, leadership has also relationship with power. There are three types of power: inborn power, official power, moralistic power. Inborn power is a power that a pand constantly tell the group. The leader also needs to bring in tension to the group and make the group enjoy the changes. As the formal CEO of Intel wrote, “only the paranoid survive”. The performance of a group is achieved by all the members of the group. The leader should persuade the members to perform their part to achieve the desirable performance. The leader also should have servant leadership. In the past, the leader gave out orders to the group but now, the leader serve for the members of group to serve for the customer. Lastly, the leader should bring up the followers.Live like movies, Movies like liveThe lecture is about how the speaker has lived his life. When he was little, he was just a normal kid. He would go watch a movie with the money he got from his parents on New Year ’s Day or he would just watch “Toyo Myeunghwa” or “Myeonghwa Geugjang”. At that time, when children were asked about what they want to become, they would answer that they want to become a president, art from people. This is because it was a different story from the other movies. After he finished the course at Hangyerei, he went into the Korea Film Academy. There, he met few people who later worked as co-director of his movie or director of other famous movies. Before his debut in film directing industry, all of his friends at film academy graduated and became the assistant director of famous directors. His friend, Kim Tae-Hoon and he thought that 3D movies would grow big in near future and from then he wrote scenarios for SF movies. They then made an animation called “Ark” and after that, a production agency called them for the movie, “Yeogo Gwoidam2”. The movie was a copy from the well-known Japanese movie. However, they thought it was a shame to debut with that movie and turned down the offer. They then looked through their past scenarios and thought they didn’t have any potential. So they thought over and went back to the production agency and started making the movie. While th to make Korea a developed country. The subtopic is “To dream, to challenge, and to thank”. He begins with a joke. He insist to substitute A for 1 point and Z for 26 points. The word “luck”, “money”, “hard work” and “knowledge” do not come out to be 100 points but the word “attitude” makes out 100 points nicely. Another word that comes out to be 100 points is “take a rest”. You need some level of stress in your life. If you are stressed out, you need some rest and if not, you may get sick. Then, the speaker showed pictures of 4 people which include Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Larry Page and Sorenstam. They all are on the top. In order to be the best in whatever field one is in, one should dream big, try hard to achieve the goal and thank.The lecture went on to explain on how to make Korea a developed country. In 2003, he worked as a minister. While he was working, the ministry made the standard of broadcasting and communication for the first time and it was exported to many countries. Inrney to England was reported. However, he quitted studying after a year because it was difficult. His English was not improving and studying with younger generations was challenging. Instead of studying, he “experienced”. He traveled around Europe, went to musicals and spent his time playing. He asserts that he learned a lot more from “experiencing” than studying. When he was in London, he went to the small hair shop and worked from the scratch. For the first six months, he swept the floors and washed hairs. At first, there were no clients that went out with a good hair cut. So he tried hard to do his best. He believes that if you don’t change your goal and stick with it, some day you will be on the top of your game. He also asserts that you should not change your goal until you have achieved it. Likewise, dramatic changes are taking place in the world.The second change is environment. We are running out of natural resources and reservoir. The fuel will be gone in 47years. The alternative energies are now being developed and used in some part of the world. In the case of “Saemanguem”, it destroyed the natural resources.The next important change is about NGO. Jobs related to NGO, NPO and fund raising are scarce. There are many universities looking for people with knowledge about NGO. NGO related jobs bring out many benefits. To list some examples, the president Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize because he worked for habf NGO as he said in his lecture “NGO is the most credible organization, Government, congress, judicial system, policeman are considered to have problems.” The speaker himself as general director for Peoples’ Solidarity for Participatory Democracy proposed 78 acts and a half of them were passed. In democracy, voting for candidates is essential but it is only a small part of democracy. On top of that, people should participate to change the world with their own hands.The lecturer shares his story. He once went to a conference and talked to the president of the jobless association. The president of this organization was also jobless. So he decided to create a job for himself. The speaker also met a person who is a “good organizer”, a person who organize funeral, inheritance of parent’s fortune. The message he was trying to deliver here is there are countless jobs and opportunities. Friends around you right now may pay the same amount of money and go to the same school but the future will started by mainly the unqualified buyers buying their own home. Together with them, there are three main causes of the financial crisis: 1) Mortgage organizations’ greedy intentions and action 2) Blinded investors from risk 3) Dishonesty rating agencies. Due to these following reasons, people are suffering greatly from big financial loss which has led to high unemployment, reduced individual income, widespread home foreclosures. It is indeed worse than any previous financial crisis since the great depression.The speaker provided a thought experiment. The assumptions are as followed: If you work for an investment bank and one investment provides 40% chance of successful and 60% of unsuccessful return. When your bonus is determined by how much your company and you make money, what would you do? On top of that he adds one another thought experiment which states that an investment pays 15% annual return for 3 years and in the 4th year, there is a chance of total loss of principle. The resl crisis. Together with the incentive system which pays by volume that being sold and duplicative ratings, risk of loss borne by the investors, financial crisis was inevitable.The leaders should understand the role of incentive. If they give employees the appropriate incentives to do the right thing, then the employees with rationale mind set will do the right thing to maximize their profit.The road to recovery will be harsh and long since many taxpayers even in Korea will suffer greatly from this incident. It is also imperative to study the causes of the financial crisis and find the way to overcome the situation thus, people should learn from this mistake and never make the same mistake.7. PeaceThe topic is religion and peace. The speakers begin with the story about three blind men going to the zoo. These men go to the zoo and touch the part of elephant. Each man touches the different part of the elephant and all had different observations. Then, three men argue because their experierealizing who we really are, we should learn to respect each other as we are.People should recognize we are on the same planet. Most people think we are on separate planet. We should realize that if we pollute our water, it is not only affecting the water in Korea but also the whole planet. We must go beyond ignorance and blindness. On this earth, people all over the countries are all related and depend upon each other. People sometimes seem to forget that the separation of country, continent does not physically and geographically separate us. There are four different characteristics of the present society: Eroded national borders, An information based society, A civilized society, A network society.First of all, as the national borders have eroded, the world has been more globalized. Overall, it brought out many advantages such as larger markets, better jobs, and improved living standards.Secondly, the society has put a great emphasis on information. Information now plays a big role in a production especially in terms of a division of labor and a vertical mass production system. It also led to significant changes in production method and business organization.In addition, the society has become more civilized. Before the fall of USSR and Eastern Europe in the late 1980s, political ideology was mainly consisted of liberalism and communism. After communism collapsed, the boundary of politsociety has changed from the past, the role of leadership has also changed. The present society is no longer a vertical and uniform society. It is rather horizontal with variety. In such society, leadership is needed in every individual to predict changes and to lead the changes.The definition of leadership varies depending on history, an era and a scholar. Generally speaking, leadership is “the process of influencing human relation or oneself while one is achieving a goal. According to Warren G. Bennis and Burt Nanus, the meaning of future leadership will differ from the current one in many ways.Theories of leadership and leadership developmentThis lecture deals with the history of leadership and strategies to develop leadership. In the 20th country, many studies were done on leadership which led to accumulated research achievements and systematic studies. In the early research of leadership, scholars focused on trait and behavior. They concentrate more on conditional theory and leadeligence, and social intelligence.Next theory of leadership is behavioral theory which states that the most effective leader can be formulated by studying certain leadership behaviors. The examples of leadership style measurements are concern for organization and concern for people.The third theory of leadership is situational theories which assert that situational factors such as followers, tasks and structure of organization have as much great influence on leadership as on personal traits and behavioral factors. The situational leadership model explains this theory in details. The model divides the type of leadership into four levels which are authoritarian leadership, democratic leadership, interactive leadership, and laissez-faire leadership. The main idea of the theory is that different leadership should be applied to different situations.Additionally, followership theory explains that followers should be taken care of in order to help the leader. Daft listed four strategies of folng allows one to give out good impression of oneself. In the past, people used to live in a small community where everyone knows each other. However, in the present society, we need to tell others who we are and present ourselves. We need to tell others who we are and what our thoughts are. Most importantly, we need to be able to deliver our message to the listener. The listener has to understand what message we are trying to transfer. For example, when dating a girl, a boy can allure girl with a sweet talk. They can meet for a couple of times and as a girl gets to know more about boy, she would be able to notice whether or not his action matches with his words. Likewise, this applies to our daily life. In a society like today, we need to show our capabilities to others. The basic method of delivering such method is through speaking. In a job interview, we are given as little time as one to five minutes to introduce ourselves and sell ourselves. The interviewers will judge us based on and eventually had become one. Since then, he had to really train himself to suit himself to his career. He had his problems during his career but he overcame and won his life.The lesson here is not to memorize the same old story. We should speak from our heart. We also should not lose the key factor starting from introduction, body to the conclusion.4. Leadership and image-makingThe objective of this lecture is to create an image as a leader, specifically we need to recognize the importance of identity of an individual, to study effective image making, to learn the image making for a situation as a leader.First important factor is to something that we can distinguish outside. We should study what image or certain looks that suit ourselves and bring the best out of us. We need to appear professional outside.
